Interview with District 8 Tribute - Alex

Alex Stein

Stephanie in Suzanne Collins’ riveting tale of life in North America after its destruction, a powerful Capitol emerges as residents of its twelve outlying Districts individually struggle to survive under its bleak rule. Each year, the Capitol assembles its Gamemakers to create an elaborate arena filled with deadly trigger points and calls upon one girl and one boy from each of the twelve Districts to play in its nationally televised Hunger Games. As part of the ‘game’ The bored, wealthy people of the Capitol are entertained by the spectacle and Capitol-appointed prep teams create an image for each tribute by providing costumes, makeovers and talking points. Tributes who impress the Capitol viewers win "sponsors" — or wealthy fans, who will fund gifts of food and equipment at critical points in the Games.

Q1: The Wedding Games has no such sinister plot, instead they are our chance to celebrate creativity and your chance to impress your audience and win ‘favor’ and prizes, just as the contestants of the Hunger Games must.  The Heroine of the Hunger Games is Katniss Everdeen.  She is a witty, survival-savvy girl who yearns to trust in a world that has shown her nothing of the sort.  In 25 words or less define your image for your voting public. I am a bold self-starter with a unique worldview that inspires a variety of passions and feeds a determination to defy all odds.

Q2: What inspired you to enter the Wedding Games?  Are you an experienced designer looking to showcase your talents, or someone just starting out and wanting to make a name for yourself.  Maybe you are a Hunger Games fan.  Give us some insight into what has motivated you to enter the arena. I am a wedding and event planner with an extensive background in theatre, so Iíve always had a passion for artistic expression and design. Beyond that, I love taking on new challenges. To be honest, I had not read the books or seen the movie until I found out about the competition. Even though my friends had been raving about it for months, I had yet to jump on the bandwagon (maybe Iím a bit of a rebel). After researching the trilogy and exploring the author's (she has a background in playwriting!) inspiration for writing the books, I fell in love with the concept. That instant, I went out and bought the first bookóimmediately, I was hooked. Particularly, I identify with Katniss' post-modern day Joan of Ark selflessness and courage inspires me.

Q3: In the Hunger Games, the ‘Gamemakers’ design and control The Hunger Games. They design the arena, the outfits, and a number of the deaths. From the tiniest detail to the biggest bloodbath, the ‘Gamemakers’ are in charge of entertaining the Capitol to the fullest.  Turning back to the much more wonderful world of Weddings and Events, who are the ‘Gamemakers’ who inspire you?  We want you to give us the names of 3 and tell us briefly what it is that inspires you about their work.

  • The Underappreciated Talent. There are so many gifted wedding and event designers, who simply have yet to gain (or, unfortunately, donít have the resources) public recognition or acclaim. Even without the press or the glitz and glamour, they march on and continue to do what they love ñ helping people turn their vision into a creative reality.
  • Joe Simon Wedding Films. Having a background in theatre and film myself; I can certainly appreciate the creativity, time, and effort that go into wedding cinematography, but Joe Simon takes cinematography to a whole new level. His films are not simply recordings of one day; they are love stories brought to life. The quality, uniqueness, and astute attention to detail show his dedication to integrity. Each film truly captures the individuality of the couple and allows them to re-experience an invaluable moment in time.
  • Marcy Blum Associates. What can I say? This woman transformed event planning into an art and a career. I also appreciate the fact that she has incorporated her culinary passion into her work. She is an inspiration to any aspiring wedding and event planner. Quite literally, she wrote the book: Wedding Planning for Dummies.

Q4: Finally, what can we expect to see from you in your Wedding Games submission (we don’t want you to describe your submission here, but instead give us a teaser or a sense of how you are going to approach this design challenge). Underneath the spectacle, The Hunger Games is about the power of humanity. Against all odds (whether they be in your favor or not), compassion and love strengthen our resolve and empower our will to endure. That, to me, is inspiring, and you can expect to see the same underlying theme in my design.

Happy Wedding Games! May The Odds Be Ever in Your Favor.
